Financial Assistance & Scholarships

The following information contains brief descriptions of the kinds of funding currently available to Au.D. students.  The program has reaffirmed its commitment to support doctoral students but there are several criteria for awarding funds.  The criteria are grade point average, evaluations of clinical competency, and funding agency requirements.

Faculty members with funding to hire students will employ students in Communicative Disorders whenever possible.  It is recognized, however, that there may be times when specific skills are needed for the completion of a research project.  If the skills are not found in students within Communicative Disorders, then the faculty is free to hire another student with the required skills.  Questions regarding funding should be directed to the Au.D. Program Coordinator.

Au.D. Academic Stipends/Student Work Program

The Au.D. Academic Stipends and Student Work Program are awarded to first-, second- and third-year Au.D. students at both the Madison and Stevens Point campuses.  These stipends are given out yearly to the top academic and clinical students within the program.  Students may be required to work within the department approximately 5 hours a week.

Wisconsin Speech-Language Pathology & Audiology Professional Association (WSHA)

Student scholarship opportunities are also posted on the WSHA web site.  Criteria, applications deadlines, requirements, and monetary value for each scholarship can be found at this site.  WSHA scholarships are typically awarded to first or second students.  The following WSHA scholarships are available:

    • Judith H. and David J. Ward Scholarship
    • Gladys McKinley Scholarship

Nominations are sought from faculty, clinical professors and graduate students.  Nominations should be limited to one page and should address student leadership as evidenced by support of fellow graduate students and actions which foster professional development and personal relationships among students.

Nominees should be first-year students in good academic standing majoring in speech-language pathology, audiology or communication sciences.  There are no restrictions as to citizenship, age, gender, undergraduate degree, financial need or grade point average.
Nominations should be submitted by the end of the spring semester.  Nominees will be contacted and asked to prepare a short response to a limited number of questions.  A Committee will consider all such responses and announce the recipient of the LOON Fellowship Award.
